Propionic acid is a colorless liquid with a sharp rancid odor. It is a short-chain saturated fatty acid comprising ethane attached to the carbon of a carboxy group.
Propionic acid is mainly used as a preservative and antifungal agent for food. It can also be used as an inhibitor of medium viscous substances for beer, a nitrocellulose solvent and a plasticizer. It can also be used for the preparation of nickel plating solutions, the preparation of food spices and medicines.
