Dimethyl Sulfate is an odorless, corrosive, oily liquid with an onion-like odor that emits toxic fumes upon heating. Dimethyl sulfate is used in industry as a methylating agent in the manufacture of many organic chemicals. Inhalation exposure to its vapors is highly irritating to the eyes and lungs and may cause damage to the liver, kidney, heart and central nervous system, while dermal contact causes severe blistering. It is a possible mutagen and is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. (NCI05)

1. Used as a methylating agent for the manufacture of dimethyl sulfoxide, caffeine, vanillin, aminopyrine, trimethoprim, as well as the pesticide acephate, etc.

2. Used as a reagent for the determination of coal tar products, as a methyl substituting agent in organic synthesis, and also as a solvent for aromatic hydrocarbons.

3. An important organic intermediate, mainly used as a methylating agent in pesticide production.

4. Can be used in the synthesis of organic chemical raw materials such as ethers and aldehydes.

5. Can be used in the synthesis of cationic dyes and reactive dyes.

6. Can be used in the synthesis of additives and catalysts such as light stabilizers.

7. In the polymer field, it can be used for the synthesis of polysulfone monomers and for plastic modification.

8. In the daily chemical field, it can be used for the preparation and dissolution of photographic emulsions, coating of photosensitive materials, synthesis of phenolic, ether and aldehyde fragrances, synthesis of nitro musk, etc.

9. Can be used for alkylation, acylation and etherification in pharmaceutical synthesis.
