Octane is a straight chain alkane composed of 8 carbon atoms. It has a role as a xenobiotic.N-octane is a colorless liquid with an odor of gasoline. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Hence floats on water. Produces irritating vapor.

1. Mainly used as a component of solvent gasoline and industrial gasoline. Also used as a solvent for printing inks, a diluent for coating solvents, a solvent for butyl rubber, and a solvent for organic reactions such as olefin polymerization.

2. Used as a solvent and chromatographic standard substance, and also in organic synthesis.
